ICU Var 5 is used to tag those patients that "overflow" onto other ICU units while under the care of a specific ICU service.

  • Because some patients "overflow" to more than one unit during their ICU stay, ICU Var 3 is also used for this purpose.
  • Used at HSC and STB
  • this tag was introduced in the early 1990's as requested by Dr. Perry Gray.
  • he used this information to monitor bed numbers for a specific ICU service and also review the frequency of patient movement to accommodate increased volume for that service.
  • for EXAMPLES of how to code see: Overflow to other units - Critical Care HSC and STB only
